TEN TIPS TO A MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME THIS WINTER

RHP Mechanical Systems Offers Ways to Remain Green Throughout the Winter

When it comes to heating a home, there are several cost-effective solutions that residents can take advantage of to lower power bills, keep the house cleaner and ensure the highest air quality. RHP Mechanical Systems offers homeowners these helpful hints to remain green (and save some green!) even though the white stuff has officially fallen.

  1. 1. Have your HVAC system inspected and serviced at the beginning of each heating or cooling season. This includes inspecting the system’s ductwork and insulation.
  2. 2. Set the thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting. Lowering the temperature just two degrees can significantly impact the monthly power bill.
  3. 3. Make sure vents are not blocked by heating registers, drapes, furniture or rugs, and clean them regularly with a vacuum or broom.
  4. 4. Change air filters frequently. Dirty filters can increase operating costs so changing them at regular intervals can help lower bills. Filters should be checked at least every six months and more often where there are dusty conditions, such as the Nevada desert.
  5. 5. Make sure an outside heat pump isn’t blocked by shrubbery, leaves or other items.
  6. 6. Make sure your HVAC system is properly sized for the space it is intended to heat or cool.
  7. 7. Check to make sure your home is adequately insulated. Proper insulation not only helps keep the house cleaner and quieter, it can also reduce energy bills by up to 20 percent.
  8. 8. Keep blinds and curtains open on south and west-facing windows to allow light in to heat the house and close all window treatments at night to keep heat in.
  9. 9. Purchase a programmable thermostat that can be set to varying temperatures at different times of the day or days of the week. Programming the thermostat can reduce heating costs by nearly 10 percent when at home and helps save energy when the house is unoccupied.
  10. 10. Seal all cracks, leaks or holes with caulking, insulation or weather stripping to avoid the escape of warm air and infiltration of cold air into the home.
